Have you ever wanted to be instantly beautified? Like, Cinderella’s godmother kind of makeover, you know?
Try being in a long distance relationship- quick makeovers have become my expertise. For three weeks I’ll resemble a zombie- hobbit hybrid, and suddenly when my boyfriend is about to be in town, I try this weird thing called “putting on makeup” and “shaving my legs.” It’s wild.
We all have our reasons we need to elevate our beauty regime to the extreme, but I’m here to let you in on a few insider secrets I’ve picked up from both personal experience, and some exclusive expert tips I’ve had the opportunity to try thanks to L&C.
So, if you’re going on a date, going out with your girls, or simply just want to change up your look and feel darn good about yourself, read on for these tricks that I swear by.
Get A Facial
I know, facials are expensive. You’re talking to somebody who’s living in one of the priciest cities in the world, making ends meet with an advertising salary. Trust me, I know expensive.
But, I also know a thing or two about a worthwhile investment. You have one body, and if there was ever a more worthy investment than to keep yourself healthy and glowing, please inform me. I ventured to the Ambra Salon and European Spa recently and decided to try my first facial. It was life-changing. They assessed my skin, and provided a treatment that was completely unique to my skin’s needs. I usually have to wear foundation of some sort, but my skin looked so fresh after my facial, I didn’t wear any face makeup for two weeks after, and simultaneously have never received so many compliments on my skin. Which is madness, really, given that I’ve used a combo of concealer and foundation since I’ve been in 8th grade.
A couple of insider’s notes from my insanely (no, really, I’ve never talked to someone who knows this much about facial skin) esthetician:
- The most worthwhile facials will utilize High Frequency Facial machinery.
- The key to utilizing an at-home clay mask to reap the benefits similar to that of a spa treatment is to never let it dry out. Clay is amazing to remove just the right amount of oil from your pores. If you let it dry, it’s virtually removing all of it- you don’t want that.
Get A Haircut
This one’s kind of boring, but definitely imperative to changing up your look. A good hair cut is like a pair of shoes: it has the power to completely make or break your look.
Haircuts can be tricky though, because flattering cuts vary with face shape, hair type, hair color, etc.. Here‘s a helpful guide that will at least give you a head start in the right direction.
If you’re looking for a Stylist in Chicago, I will never recommend anyone more highly than Samantha Evan at Stranded Beauty & Barber. She’s one of those stylists who can look at you and knows immediately what styles, colors, etc. will look best on you. While she specializes in some daring looks (if you’re doing something drastic, you must go to her), she truly offers unparalleled skills whether you arrive with a picture inspo of Rihanna or a more basic look you stole off Pinterest. She makes sure you leave the salon with exactly everything you wanted and more.
If you have more time than a week to prep for a makeover, my best tip to getting longer and thicker hair is to start taking Biotin or Pre-Natal vitamins. My hair wouldn’t grow past my shoulder previous to taking them, and now it’s closer to my butt than my shoulders. And the best part? You can grab one of those bad boys for sub $20 at any drug store. You’re welcome!
Watch What You Eat
At the beginning of this year, I really starting prioritizing my health, working out 4-5 times every week, and (key word) trying to pay more attention to my nutritional (note: not caloric) intake.
I will never advocate quick fixes. Like I’ve mentioned previously, you get one body and you need to prioritize it and invest in it every single day. However, I’m human, I like donuts, and whenever I eat one, it will noticeably place itself on my thunder thighs (sweet).
Eat Snap Kitchen. That’s it, that’s my advice on this one. I tried it for 21 days and lost 6 pounds (granted, I was in the final training stages of my marathon and was running up to 60 miles per week during 2 of those). It’s delicious, it’s nutritional, it’s organic, it’s quick; insert every positive adjective here. The Coconut Shrimp is to die for, the Spaghetti Bolognese is sinfully good, and I would do bad things for their Spinach and Goat Cheese Scramble.
So, while it may not be feasible to eat Snap Kitchen every day for the rest of your life, if you eat it for even a short period, you will see results. I’m so obsessed with them, I’m having an entire post dedicated solely to them coming up, so I mean it when I say that this works for an array of fitness goals.
Also, drink all the water. This will clear up your complexion, help you digest and metabolize food more efficiently, and also make you eat less. Win-win all around.
Pay Attention To The Details (I.E. Your Nails)
I am scoffing at myself for writing this, because my roommate swears by this trick, and I vehemently disagreed with her- until I got a no-chip manicure at Ambra Salon and European Spa for the first time. I have legitimately have the same nail polish on that I did 2 months ago. That is 8 weeks of perfect (albiet slightly grown out) nail polish without a single chip in it.
It’s helped my nails grow and looks infinitely better than the chippy nail polish I paint on myself. If you live in Chicago, definitely go to Ambra for this- they’re one of the only salons in the city that carry the highest quality brands in the industry, and still charge the same price for it.
Tan- Fake It ‘Til You Make It
Let’s face it- having a little glow can make all the difference. It can hide those recent pounds you’ve put on (hey, if you can’t tone it, tan it), makes eyes pop, and in a way I can’t adequately type, just makes us look better.
But, sun spots, wrinkles, and saggy skin coincidentally don’t make us look better. Coming from an ex tanning addict who went through a “bronze era” as my friends so kindly refer to it- I’m 24 and already combatting the byproducts of this.
Wear SPF every single day. Even on a regular Tuesday where you’re doing nothing other than going to work and having a Friends marathon on your couch after. I use this moisturizer that contains SPF, and also this foundation that does as well.
I recommend a professional applying it by hand. They’ll know which shade is best for you, and will even contour abs, cheekbones, etc.. If you’re not comfortable being naked in front of them, or need a cheaper alternative, try Versa Spa tans. It’s done in a machine, can be as low as $5 depending on where, and what day you go on (LA Tan has $5 Spray Tan Mondays, hey hey!), and the formula they use morphs to your skin to create a natural, and glowing, finish.
Give Those Lashes Some Lovin’
Your eyelashes make a big ol’ difference in your overall appearance. I know this because when I tried Stylisted last month, they applied fake eye lashes, and the pictures from that night- well, let’s just say they were all profile picture material.
So, for your quick fix, grab some fake eyelashes. Target carries my favorite brand, Eyelure, which have approximately a bajillion options, that vary from subtle volume boosts to dramatic lengthening options, and everything in between. I always opt for these because they’re the best of subtle lengthening and volumizing that make a difference, but not the kind of difference that make it look like your lashes are fake.
If your’e looking to lengthen your own lashes without buying fake ones, here are a couple of tips for that too:
- Apply vaseline before bed every night. It’s like conditioner for your eyelashes, and I’ve noticed this has made a big difference for volume in my own.
- Invest in a lash enhancer: I recommend this one for a major natural boost
