Okay so I realize that this post might seem a little crazy considering it’s almost 100° outside, but September is here and pretty soon your minidress is going to seem way too mini for those crisp fall days. Luckily, you don’t have to buy a whole new fall wardrobe just because the season is changing (but if you want to, we won’t stop you). Here are five sure fire ways to transition your summer wardrobe into fall with pieces you already have in your closet (saving money and looking stylish, score!)
1. Throw a sweater over it
This isn’t your school uniform days of crew-neck sweaters over plaid skirts—to make this style work you have to make sure it’s still a flattering silhouette. If you’re going to opt for a flowy maxi, try a fitted sweater over it. If you’re really feeling the oversized look, you can always knot your sweater on the side to give it a little shape.
2. Grab a Boyfriend Cardigan
Your one wardrobe staple this fall definitely has to be the boyfriend cardigan. Pair it with your favorite jeans, over a pair of tweed shorts, or layer it with a denim shirt. Plus, you can’t really get much more comfortable than an oversized cardi.
3. Style it with a scarf
One thing I missed this summer was the ability to accessorize! When it’s 80°+ outside the most I can manage is a dress and maybe a statement necklace before the heat gets the best of me, but now that it’s chillier scarves are a go-to option. Not only will they dress up a casual outfit, but they give you another layer so that your summer dress doesn’t look so out of place. Go for fall colors like a good army green or burgundy to fit in with the season.
4. Invest in boots and knee socks
While Clueless did have a lot of questionable 90’s outfit choices, one thing we can’t really deny is Cher’s love of knee socks. Channel your inner Valley Girl and pair them with some great knee high boots or ankle boots (if you’re a little more fashion forward) and you can rock that leather mini or lace dress all you want.
5. Accessorize with tights
Nothing says fall more than that first time you grab for a pair of tights in the morning. Tights will become your new best friend when it comes to styling this season. Your favorite summer dress or shorts can be put back into the outfit rotation if you add a pair of tights under them. Just make sure to keep the colors neutral, a good pair of black tights can do wonders.
