We all need a change of scenery every once in awhile. So despite the fact that we can work in our apartments 24/7 or fall into the routine of swiping our Gold Cards at Starbucks when we need to get out of said house, there are numerous coffee shops throughout Chicago that offer not only cozy spots to work in but also great eats and drinks! Each place offers something unique and are a great way to step out of your coffee-comfort zone, especially if you’re only used to your Keurig or that Caramel Macchiato.
Here’s a rundown of seven coffee shops that offer a great work environment and will fill your coffee fix.
Ipsento – Bucktown
2035 N Western Ave, Chicago, IL 60647
Ipsento, which got its name from two latin words that, when put together, means “self-discovery,” has many things going on. They obviously have the coffees and the lattes, but their doughnuts are super cute and they also have a beer and wine menu! So for those days you’re not really sure if coffee or booze will keep you going, this is a great spot to try both! They also offer “coffee classes” that delve into the history of the blessed drink or that teach you new techniques, if you’re so inclined.
Ellipsis Coffee – Edgewater
1259 W. Devon Avenue, Chicago, IL 60660
While there are a few better known places in Edgewater, Elipsus is a quiet little haven. Almost the complete opposite of Starbucks, they have a pretty simple menu with a small outdoor seating area. What’s really nice about this spot is the indoor seating; there’s not a ton of it, but I always manage to find a spot. The lattes are great and they also offer lunch items as well. Really, this is a lowkey spot to go to when you really need to focus and work.
Volumes Book Cafe – Wicker Park
1474 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL 60622
This place is fairly new, and honestly such a great concept! Unlike Barnes & Noble, Volumes Bookcafe is the perfect place to work on a rainy day (or even a beautiful, yet productive, day) because it is so, so inviting and comfy. Add it to the great bookstore (and their numerous events) and you get your best new work spot!
Pickwick Coffee Roasting – The Loop (near the Jackson Redline)
22 E Jackson Ave, Chicago, IL 60604
This look-and-you-may-miss-it coffee shop is a gem in the hussle and bussle of the city. Located on your walk from the Jackson L stop to the lake feels open despite being located in a crevice between and makes a great work spot if you’re in The Loop for any reason. It’s super Instagram worthy due to its uniqueness, so you can get those likes while being productive as well!
HERO Coffee – The Loop (near Harold Washington Library)
439 S Dearborn St, Chicago, IL 60605
Another coffee shop downtown, HERO Coffee offers some great breakfast options! It kind of brings a vintage feel with it’s long counter, but that definitely adds to the great vibe here. It’s a little more crowded, as some downtown coffee shops can be, so if you like to do work around others, this is the place for you! Also, the coffee-sleeves are cute and inspirational (depending which one you get).
