At just 25, Jasmina Aganovic is the founder and CEO of Bona Clara, a successful beauty company that boasts a national following, a unique concept and an inspiring business model. The company offers products geared toward skin at certain ages–the line comes in versions for women in their 20s through 50s and up– and is sold by brand representatives who host parties, Avon-style, in their homes, but also sell through their personal e-commerce websites. Aganovic has done all of this in three short years. An MIT grad with a degree in biochemical engineering she launched her company in Boston, where it’s still headquartered, when she graduated in 2010. I talked to her about her inspiration for the Bona Clara, its success, and the newest product launch (which we’re also giving away, below!).
WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO START BONA CLARA?
My research and internships while I was at MIT had loose applications to the beauty industry and sparked some interest for me. I was always excited about the industry but never thought to make it my career until my senior year of college. I took the plunge right after graduation looking for job opportunities specific to the beauty industry.
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH YOUR UNIQUE BUSINESS MODEL?
Getting into the direct selling industry was an unexpected discovery. When I launched the initial brand online, we saw a lot of growth really quickly. As I reached out to some of our top customers, I learned that they were talking about the brand and its story to the women in their life. Word of mouth was helping us grow, and I saw how powerful it was. That was why I reconsidered our business model and shifted it to a modern day social selling platform [with both the parties and e-commerce].
WHY DO YOU THINK THE COMPANY HAS BEEN SO SUCCESSFUL THUS FAR?
We are modernizing a century-old business model. We answer the challenges of the modern day woman trying to have it all: time with the family, a personal life, plus a career she is passionate about. We are uniquely positioned in the industry and this is what has made things truly interesting for our own team and those looking at us externally.
