Some holidays you simply cannot escape.
I think this on an airplane, en route to the ultimate distraction, perusing Southwest’s drink menu for a cocktail of choice and spotted: “Traveling during the holidays? If you’re in the air with us , we’ll get the fun started with a stiff drink free of charge.” There are two holidays listed. New Year’s and Valentine’s Day. NEW YEAR’S AND VALENTINES DAY?! There are like 30-some holidays you could have chosen and VALENTINE’S DAY?! I mean, a free drink’s a free drink I suppose… but you catch my drift of unavoidable holidays.
Let’s face it: there are also some holidays that in addition to being unavoidable, are also the equivalent of stepping on a stage with the spotlight glaring in your eyes, giving the microphone a 1,2 test tap and announcing “ahem, world, I am single. Not like the cute single you see in movies. Like the kind of single where I ordered enough Grub Hub for a small family and when asked how many forks I’ll be needing, I snap back ‘just one, THANKS.’”
I mean, don’t get me wrong, I enjoy being cross-examined by my extended family about why I’m single over holiday dinners as much as the next girl, but there’s something about that Valentine’s Day aisle that makes me avert my eyes quicker than a drunk dude cat-calling me at a bar.
So, if you’re in my party-of-one boat this Valentine’s Day, welcome, you’re not alone and this post is for you. Here’s 14 fun ways to celebrate this infamous day of love- 14 suggestions of ways to celebrate your love for yourself and your friends and family and careers and every other kick-ass thing you have going for you at this very moment.
1. Grab A Mani/Pedi at Spa At Dana Hotel – we all know this is one of my favorite spas in Chicago, but they have killer specials for Valentine’s Day for us single gals including the Champagne Bliss Mani/Pedi, which clearly combines all of our favorite things. Or if you’re looking for a little something more than the typical go-to, they’re also offering Cupid’s Bow Body Polish where your skin will be exfoliated, primed and perfected, or the Perfect Pair, which is a special on a Brazilian Wax plus a mani. WALK, DON’T RUN, my girls!
2. See #DateMe: An OKCupid Experiment at Second City – Sometimes we need to laugh at the disaster that is our love lives, amirite? Head to this infamous improv spot with your girls and get ready to laugh at the disaster that is other people’s dating lives. It’s hilarious, it’s relatable and it’s completely affordable. Grab tickets here!
3.Take a Cooking Class – One of my favorite parts of being single is having “me time”- time to work on my blogging, my book, my friendships, to workout and make myself better for me. What better day to tackle a new recipe- or heck, a new skill- than Vday? I recommend the Chopping Block– they offer a massive array of cuisines to choose from and have a class for every level of culinary ability.
4.Go See 50 Shades Darker– Self explanatory.
5.Have A W(h)ine & Cheese Night – There’s always the option of running to your nearest Whole Foods, spending a small fortune on an assortment of cheese (please do not forget your Blueberry Goat Cheese- I AM ADDICTED), and a few bottles of Barefoot to keep the night on the cheaper side. If you and your girls are looking for a night out though, there’s plenty of restaurants running specials. I can’t wait to try this one at The Twisted Vine!
6.Workout & Treatyoself At Exhale – (Spoiler alert: this is my favorite on the list) Squeeze in a workout class- Exhale offers absolutely killer classes that will transform your body. It’s become one of my favorite barre spots in the city, even more so because it also doubles up as a spa. After a workout, grab a facial, a massage or try one of their many services that is WILL CHANGE YOUR GD LIFE. They even have Valentine’s specials including Thai Massage + Stretch, Chill Yoga, or Smart Peel, which I couldn’t recommend more for glowing skin during the harsh winter.
7.Get A Tattoo – If you’re looking for a Valentine’s Day to remember, walk on the wild side and go through with that tattoo you’ve always wanted.
8.Check Out A Museum – Grab your best friend and head to the Art Institute, The Field Museum (the Tattoo exhibit is SO cool), The Museum of Science and Industry or my personal favorite, the Shedd Aquarium. Raleigh talks all about hacking all of the aforementioned museums and then some here.
9.Grab Cocktails With The Girls – Need some new spot suggestions? We’re loving Cindy’s Rooftop for great drinks plus a great view, The Allis At Soho House for unreal cocktails and Lost Lake for tiki drinks and a new Chicago hot spot.
10.Retail Therapy – Mostly because our closet could always use another LBD and ASOS has a great sale going on with code: SWIPE10 .
11.Try a New Restaurant – Feeling adventurous? Head to Girl and the Goat for exquisite and unique combinations, Bar Takito for a spicy twist on Mexican food or Mia Francesca for Italian Food that is supposed to be one of the best spots in the city (I’ll let you know how it is- I’ll be visiting soon!).
12.Host a Panty Exchange – This is on my 2017 to-do list- invite your best friends, purchase enough cheap wine to feed a small country and tell everyone to grab a cute pair! The instagrams are truly endless.
13.Go On An Ice Cream Date With Yourself – You guys. If you have not been to Jeni’s Ice Cream, Valentine’s Day is the time. Honestly, what better way to celebrate the day of love than to binge eat ice cream that boasts flavors like Gooey Butter Cake, Goat Cheese With Red Cherries, Wildberry Lavender and a bajillion other unique flavors that will do things to you no boyfriend ever could.
14.Stay in, order enough GrubHub for a family of four and when they ask you how many forks you’ll be needing proudly tell them “just one, thanks” 🙂
Happy Valentine’s Day, L&C loves!
