The best part about fashion is that there’s always something new, whether it’s a new denim style to get on board with or a new silhouette to rock, fashion is all about keeping up with the trends while still making them your own.
While there are undoubtedly some things about fall that never go out of style—a comfy cable knit sweater, a pair of classic riding boots—this season there are plenty of risks to be taken, and updated version of old trends to try…at least if designers have anything to say about it. Here are ten of our favorite runway trends to get on board with this season.
1. 60s Mod
It’s not too hard to get excited about bringing the 60s back—bring on the go-go boots and mini dresses! True, go-go boots might not be the most practical for work, but they’ll look awesome with your favorite skinny jeans or a dress for a night out. If you’re intimidated by rocking a bold patterned sheath dress (a la Valentino, below) on its own, try it under a blazer or cardigan, or with a pair of opaque tights (just stick to black to keep the look 2014).
2. Cape Jackets
After seeing Burberry’s monogrammed caplet on the fall runways last spring, I knew I had to have one (or three). Is it just me or does a caplet instantly make you look chicer?
3. Oversized Blazers
Borrowed from the boys is a huge trend this season, think oversized blazers and jackets straight from your boyfriend’s closet (hopefully he won’t mind the sharing).
4. Keep It Sporty
While sporty-chic is nothing new, designers took a more subtle approach to the trend this season. Think athletic inspired jackets like the ones from the Rag & Bone runway or sportswear-inspired shorts paired with a tailored jacket and boots.
5. Animal Prints
Like you needed an excuse to break out your favorite leopard jacket…
While this trend is the opposite of subtle, you can still adopt it without getting too crazy. One of the best ways to rock animal print without too much effort is a great pair of leopard ankle boots.
6. Seeing Red
This trend requires you to channel your inner Dorothy and rock a little ruby red. While designers usually opt for a darker tones for fall, this season was all about the brightest of shades. Not one to sport a full on cherry red pantsuit to your next meeting? Try mixing red accent pieces with neutrals to make the trend more wearable.
7. Fair Isle
This snow-bunny approved look was all over the fall runways with Pucci and Rag and Bone leading the pack. This is one of the easiest ones to pull together because it’s been around forever, so finding a good fair isle print shouldn’t be too hard. I love how Pucci paired the print with a brown leather legging to dress it up.
9. Cozy All Over Knits
Nothing quite says fall like a cozy sweater, and Céline and Oscar De La Renta took the trend next level. Whether you’re sporting an all over knit look like the one shown at Céline, or are opting for a more understated turtleneck, a cozy knit should be number one on your fall shopping list.
10. Leather Pants
In the words of Rachel Zoe, leather pants are everything this season (I couldn’t be more obsessed with Pucci’s belted leather trousers!). Paired with some strappy heels and a blouse, these will definitely be work or dinner date appropriate.
